The dawn of eCommerce began with financial institutions. They first conducted e-commerce using the telegraph in the 1800’s. It was mostly money transfers. By the 1980’s, EDI ANSI X12 was catching on. It was true electronic commerce. It was the exchange of documents like purchase orders or PO's, and invoices. The biggest problem was that it used proprietary standards and networks.
In 1994, the Sollod team was part of ECAT at MIT. It was the beginning of both Internet e-commerce and eProcurement. It had the first punchouts with Office Depot, VWR, and American Express. It lead to OBI and later cXML. eInvoices, or electronic invoices, came into the mix. The ‘dot.con’ boom and bust came next, ending in where we are now.
On the sell-side of e-commerce, we are in a mature market. Most major suppliers have active b2c sites, b2b sites, and punchouts. Our e-commerce sites offer millions of SKU’s to over 8,000 organizations. Regional and smaller suppliers are increasingly working with us.
Then there’s the buy side, or electronic procurement side of e-commerce. It includes e-invoices. What used to cost millions now costs thousands. The market is looking for proven solutions from experienced vendors. Our buy-side solutions currently serve over 20 schools and other organizations. Our punchout marketplaces set us apart from over 200 e-Procurement competitors.
